Cape Town Hotels – Area by Area

The right Cape Town hotel can really make all the difference to your Cape Town holiday experience.

If you enjoy night life and city living, you would probably be better off finding a Cape Town hotel in the Cape Town city centre.

Families however, might want Cape Town hotels near the beach where the sea water is warm.

So here are some Cape Town hotel guidelines to help you decide on the right Cape Town hotel.

There is no shortage of Cape Town hotels all over the Cape Peninsula ranging from budget Cape Town hotels to top Cape Town hotels. In other words you will be able to find a Cape Town hotel that is right for you, no matter how busy the tourist season.

Cape Town Hotels – City Centre

Definitely consider a Cape Town hotel in central Cape Town for some of your holiday, regardless of who you are, as you will have access to public transport, lots of tourist activities, great restaurants and night life. The centre of Cape Town is a good starting point for any Cape Town holiday.

Atlantic Seaboard Hotels – Clifton Hotels, Sea Point Hotels, Camps Bay Hotels

The Atlantic Seaboard is “City Living meets Beach Holiday”. Choose a hotel in Camps Bay / Sea Point / Clifton & Bantry Bay if you like being close to city life and the sea. There are some really top Cape Town hotels to choose from on the Atlantic Seaboard. These top Atlantic Seaboard hotels typically have the most incredible sea and sunset views.

Features of the Atlantic Seaboard:

  • Trendy city vibe.
  • Great sunsets, beaches & views. Cold sea water (swimming not ideal).
  • Less chaotic than the city centre.
  • Easy access to the City Centre, Sea Point Promenade, Waterfront, Camps Bay & Clifton beaches.
  • Restaurants & Nightlife.
  • Bad public transport. So either hire a car or rely on expensive taxis.

Hout Bay Hotels

Hout Bay is one of the most beautiful areas of Cape Town with a fishing village ambience. Hout Bay has a really nice beach (although the water is cold).

Look for a hotel in Hout Bay , if you want a holiday village atmosphere as opposed to being in the centre of Cape Town. Hout Bay public transport exists with buses and minibus taxis, but is really unreliable and unsafe, so seriously, you will need to hire a car.

Here is some Hout Bay holiday destination information:

  • Village atmosphere.
  • Restaurants.
  • More laid back than Clifton, Camps Bay and the City.
  • Only 20 mins drive to most places.
  • Exceptionally beautiful.
  • Some problems with crime. Shouldn’t affect anyone with more than a modicum of common sense.
  • Great beach.

There are two or three really top hotels in the best parts of Hout Bay as well as a lot of other accommodation choices from B&Bs to self catering villas and guest houses all over the neighbourhood.

Hout Bay has a pocket or two of poorer areas, so I’ve put together some suggestions for other non-hotel Hout Bay accommodation choices in the best areas of Hout Bay.

Newlands / Claremont / Bishopscourt / Constantia Hotels

The Southern Suburbs are green, leafy suburbs, with easy access to the train line if you choose your accommodation correctly, otherwise quick access to just about anywhere if you have a car. This is a great, central location where you will find any kind of hotel from top end Cape Town hotels to budget Cape Town hotels.

Depending on in which area you choose your southern suburbs hotel, you can feel completely tranquil, yet still be within minutes of everything Cape Town has to offer.

I would consider staying in a hotel in any one of these suburbs if I had a car, and wanted to come back to tranquil beautiful surrounds every evening after a busy day out.

Constantia in particular, is home to a number of top Cape Town hotels.

Here are the pros and cons of choosing a hotel in Constantia, Claremont, Newlands or Bishopscourt:

  • There are top Constantia hotels near and even on the Constantia wine farms
  • You will be near Kirstenbosch.
  • There are some world class restaurants in the vicinity of the top hotels.
  • Constantia, Newlands and Bishopscourt are beautiful, green and tranquil for the most .
  • You will need your own car, unless you stay in accommodation within walking distance of the train, which is the less tranquil part.
  • If you stay in a Claremont hotel, you will be near Cavendish Shopping Centre.

Southern Peninsula Hotels

If you are a nature and outdoors lover, you’ll definitely want to explore the southern Cape Peninsula (Cape Point, Simonstown, Scarborough, Kommetjie and Noordhoek). In which case it makes sense to get a hotel for a night or two in the southern Cape Peninsula as a day trip from Cape Town centre will only scratch the surface of the area and will be too short.

If you are predominantly interested in city living, then I suggest you just make a day trip out Simon’s Town way.

The False Bay side has warmer sea temperatures, and Fish Hoek and Muizenberg have beaches that are popular with families and bathers.
