Beaverlac Campsite. Camping in the wilderness

Beaverlac

Beaverlac Campsite is in the foothills of the Cederberg South Africa. Beaverlac is near Porterville on Grootfontein Farm in the Groot Winterhoek mountains, south of the Cederberg mountains, about two hours from Cape Town. If you enjoy hiking in South Africa, the Cederberg is excellent.

Camping at Beaverlac is a great weekend getaway alternative to the Cederberg South Africa, as it is much nearer Cape Town and can be visited over a weekend more easily. It has the same mountain formations as the Cederberg, and if you like the Cederberg, you will like Beaverlac.

Getting There / Directions from Cape Town

(See the MAP TO BEAVERLAC for directions to Beaverlac campsite).

Cape Town to Malmesbury
Take the N7 from Cape Town through the Swartland. You drive through Malmesbury, one of the first Swartland towns.

At Malmesbury, you can either turn off and drive via Riebeek Wes / Riebeek Kasteel to Porterville, or else you can continue straight on the N7 to Piketberg. The Piketberg route is easier but less interesting.

Driving via Riebeek Wes is definitely the more beautiful drive and takes you through the Swartland wine farm regions. You'll drive past several very attractive Swartland Vineyards.

Malmesbury to Dasklip Pass via Piketberg
If you've taken the Piketberg route (N7), you turn right on reaching Piketberg and cross the valley towards Porterville. When you've crossed the Swartland Valley, instead of turning right to Porterville, you turn left in the direction of Piekenierskloof Pass.

A few kilometres down the road, you turn right onto a dirt road leading to Dasklip Pass.

Dasklip Pass to Beaverlac
7 kms down this road, you turn right, and drive up over the Dasklip Pass. Once over the top, you will find the turn off to Beaverlac on your left.

Note: Piketberg and Porterville are about 40 kms short of Citrusdal and 70 km before Clanwilliam.

Beaverlac Highlights

Beaverlac campsite has cold water, is a pet friendly campsite, and has no cell phone coverage. Beaverlac campsite is rugged, the scenery is harshly beautiful like the rest of the Cederberg, and it beckons those who love the real outdoors. Enjoy the Western Cape Groot Winterhoek wilderness with Cederberg mountain and rock formations, huge rock pools, MTB (mountain bike) trails and Western Cape wilderness hikes. You will be given a map of MTB trails and hikes on arrival.

Beaverlac MTB Trails

There are two mountain bike trails at Beaverlac, a 10km one, suitable for beginners, and a 14km more technical trail. They are circular and start at Beaverlac campsite. Combining them into one MTB trail is possible. The terrain comprises harsh, rocky, farm tracks and mountain tracks. The difficulty level is easy to moderate. The map can be obtained on arrival at Beaverlac campsite.

Hiking South Africa - Beaverlac Hiking Trails

The Leopard Trail (information available at reception), is a day hike in the Groot Winterhoek that leads you along the Ratel River with some exceptional rock pools and rock formations. The hike itself isn't long, so spending time at the rock pools allows it to become a full day. More information and a map is available on arrival at Beaverlac Campsite.

Beaverlac Rock Pools

The real highlight of Beaverlac campsite is its remoteness, the walks & hikes into the Groot Winterhoek wilderness along a river, and the spectacular rock pools with waterfalls that one can swim in. The Beaverlac rock pools are a real pleasure particularly in summer when it can get up to 40 degrees celsius at times. Remember to bring sunblock.

The nearest and biggest rock pool is a five minute stroll from Beaverlac camp site. It is really large and very deep. You can have a real swim in it, not just a splash and paddle. There is another pool about twenty minutes walk away that is smaller and shallower (pictured above). This one's advantage is that it is less busy than the bigger pool and there is a vast section of flat rock around it, so you can lie around and suntan.

Pet Friendly Camping

Beaverlac campsite is pet-friendly. You can bring your pets camping (presumably just your dogs).

Paragliding at Dasklip

Paraglider pilots can easily base themself at Beaverlac, and paraglide at Dasklip / Porterville, a world class paragliding site. The Dasklip paragliding launch is at the top of the track that leads down to Beaverlac ie a 10 minute slow drive away.

Beaverlac - Your Cape Town Weekend Getaway

Dasklip Pass and Beaverlac are between 2.5 and 3 hours drive from Cape Town, and can be easily visited for a Cape Town weekend getaway camping trip. This is much nearer than the Cederberg.

The owners now take bookings.

There is a little shop at Beaverlac camp site which sells basics: Some meat, firewood, toiletry essentials, beer & Cederberg and Swartland wine. The shop is cheap. The owners aren't out to rip one off.

The cost of camping at Beaverlac is extremely reasonable. The track down to Beaverlac from the top of the Dasklip Pass is really, really rough. I aced it in my dad's 4x4 and was glad I wasn't in an ordinary car. Non-4x4s will definitely be fine, but it is about at their maximum rough terrain limit.

Alternative Cederberg Mountain Getaways near Cape Town

If roughing it at Beaverlac camping isn't for you, then there are many other Cederberg accommodation options (Cederberg guest houses, cottages, Cederberg camping & Cederberg self catering).

Have a look at my Cederberg page for camping ideas or for luxury Cederberg accommodation. Just bear in mind that the Cederberg is well beyond Citrusdal and Clanwilliam and that the drive is significantly longer to get there. The first turn off to the Cederberg is at Clanwilliam. However the route to the Cederberg from Cape Town is quite straightforward, as you simply drive through Piketberg and pass Citrusdal to Clanwilliam.

Nevertheless, if you're on your way to a Namaqualand or Cederberg 4x4 trip, I'd also recommend camping at Beaverlac on your way!
