I spent this weekend at Temenos Country Retreat and spiritual sanctuary in Mc Gregor, near Robertson. It is two hours outside Cape Town and makes a fantastic weekend getaway. So if you’re looking for an escape from the rat race, and want some peace and quiet in exquisite and tranquil gardens then the self catering country cottages at Temenos in Mc Gregor are perfect for you. The self-catering cottages offer the perfect retreat, each being situated privately amongst Temenos’s extensive gardens.
Mc Gregor is a rustic village filled with artistic folk, and retired folk amongst others and is an attraction for those wanting a weekend escape. Mc Gregor is 2.25 hours outside Cape Town by car. You take the N1, go through the Worcester tunnel. Take the 2nd turn off to Worcester and then follow the signs to Robertson. The road between Worcester and Robertson is home to Graham Beck Wine Estate, which offers wine tasting and sells directly to the public. It’s also the only wine estate that I know of that is open until 3pm on a Sunday. Graham Beck wines can be contacted on +27-23-626-1214.
Once you get to Robertson, and have driven about 60% of the way through, the road to Mc Gregor is off to the right at a funny angle. It is signposted.
For the purposes of self-catering, don’t plan on finding anything wonderful in terms of food in Mc Gregor. There are an assortment of bizarre shops, local cafes, a bottle store that only sells Mc Gregor wine ( which is good), and then an appalling range of wines like Tassies. The bakery in Mc Gregor had one home baked loaf of bread and some muffins when I popped in there mid Saturday morning. That was its entire stock. Very peculiar, I thought.
As a suggestion, buy your food in Robertson.
Getting back to Temenos, for those seeking tranquility, harmony, spiritual restoration, and peace, I can’t recommend it enough.
Located in close proximity to the Breede River, Robertson Wine Route, one can stay here and easily make a morning trip to go wine tasting at great wine estates like Bon Courage, Springfield, and Graham Beck as I already mentioned.
